The Friends of the San Antonio Public Library [FOSAPL] is a volunteer, 501(c)(3) organization that raises funds to support the San Antonio Public Library through both an Amazon.com store and a physical bookstore in the lower level of the Central Library (600 Soledad, San Antonio, TX 78205). The organization has an opportunity for a well-organized, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable person to recruit and train volunteers, oversee use of an Amazon store, and coordinate the provision of services for a bookstore that is currently open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays (11-4pm). Job Details
- The salary for this position is negotiable between $20-$28/hour, dependent on applicable experience and qualifications. Neither paid vacation nor health insurance are provided. The position is budgeted for 30 hours/week, or 60 hours within a two-week pay period.
- On-site work schedule may be flexible (when scheduled and approved in advance) but must include at least two Saturdays per month.
- Familiarity with Constant Contact, and the operation of an Amazon bookstore would be helpful.
- Management duties include direction and coordination of approximately 20-30 volunteers, monitoring of daily receipt envelopes and weekly bank deposits, monitoring of cash on hand for adequate number of small bills, reviewing BookCellar inventory and storage, long- and short-range planning, and communication of safety or custodial needs to appropriate Library staff.
- Marketing duties include provision of BookCellar information to Friends’ social media coordinators, monitor review of prices as inventory ages, attractive presentation of book stock, and planning of special sales.
- To ensure that sales and revenue are optimized both at the BookCellar and at branch Friends’ groups sales, collaboration with branch Friends groups is expected.
- The position will communicate regularly with the officers of the Friends of the San Antonio Public Library and the Assistant to the Library Director but will plan and accomplish most management tasks independently.
- Retail experience of at least 8 years, preferably in management of a bookstore.
- Ability to assess volunteers’ skills and competencies to maximize efficiency and teamwork
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to plan work, and to motivate individuals and a group
- Proven leadership, creativity, planning, and problem-solving skills
- Expertise with Word, Excel, email, and Square® technology
- Diplomacy, tact, patience, reliability, and emotional maturity
- Knowledge of library practices and technology would be helpful.
